What We Learned. Motion graphics

What We Learned from LEGWORK on Vimeo.

Love this motion graphic piece by Legwork. They are a full service graphic design agency, creating motion graphics, websites and print. Their website is well worth a look, some really great and interesting projects on there.

Check out more of their work on the website, which is pretty cool too: http://legworkstudio.com/

HTML5. Icon design

Along with the release of HTML 5 (which I posted about here before), the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) have released these images of the new branding graphics.

About the main logo the say “It stands strong and true, resilient and universal as the markup you write. It shines as bright and as bold as the forward-thinking, dedicated web developers you are. It’s the standard’s standard, a pennant for progress.” As a banner and signpost for HTML 5 development it works, even if it does look a little bit like a comic book hero. But what I feel really works is the Icon graphics for the different components which make up HTML 5. These icon graphics look so futuristic, they look very solid and they make sense.

The HTML 5 logo and icons are licensed under Creative Commons, meaning the user is free to use them any way they see fit. This is just an indication how W3C want the logo design and icon graphics to penetrate the web and, as there is already t-shirts and stickers available, the real world too. It makes coders look cool and it can be a streamlined brand. Now if W3C took the lessons they learned from this branding exercise, and apply it to their own brand, the world of coding would be a better place.

HTML 5. Website design.

HTML5 is…NOW! – Jason Beaird from Jason Beaird on Vimeo.

Interesting video by Jason Beaird. He talks about HTML 5 and its relative ease of use. Things should get pretty interesting once it is used in the mainstream.

Dribbble Vs AIGA

Very interesting article on the AIGA website.
AIGA is a professional association of graphic designers, they recently posted an article about community sites such as Dribble. The Dribble website is about sharing ‘shots’ of your work with other graphic designers for praise and criticism. It gives other graphic designers a chance to take a sneak peak at your work and allows you to monitor the feedback your graphic work is getting. Which seems like a good thing, especially for the freelance graphic designers out there, who may not have a partner to bounce ideas off. Sign up to Dribble is by invitation only.

AIGA raise some pretty good points – it says posting work in progress shows the client little respect. They asked how a client would feel if they heard their competition discussing work and designs yet to be realised. The prospect of ‘design by committee’ is also discussed — everybody has their own opinions and if the graphic designer listens and tries to incorporate all the comments, the design may end up looking very different to the original idea, and this is not always for the best.

This article has got a lot of reactions on the AIGA website. And many of the commentators raise  good points. Head over to the AIGA website to read more from the article and the reactions to it from the design community.

dance font. typography design

Looking at type from a different graphic perspective. This is a great font design. And really nice photograph of it in use. Designed by a graphic designer by the name of Miguel Ramirez. We interact with type so many times a day without ever realising it. Like good graphic design most type passes us by un-noticed. It is not until we see a project like the one above that we begin to think of type as being very important in our daily lives.

Check out for of his graphics and illustrations and logo designs on his website here

arcade fire

Arcade Fire release an interactive HTML 5 video and website for their new single release.

A very creative and imaginative Google Chrome experiment. Choreographed windows open and close with the music, maps are rendered throughout the film and 3D birds flock throughout. Really creative outcome and design! Check out the website here.

martino and jana

One of the most interesting websites I have seen in a long time. And definitely one of the most innovative websites I have ever seen.

Rather than updating their web site on a regular basses Martino and Jana found themselves using social networks more often. Their new website is a live feed of the social networks they use, the user interface is a simple layer which is on top. Great design.

As far as motion design and stop motion animation goes this took 4 months, 5,000 images at 15 photos per second to create. Some pretty amazing images and abstract movement here. Really well thought out and developed. They have got a nice clean, minimal website too, check it out here.
